Brief Farm History
The farm began in 1999 on a 1/2 acre of land. Officially, Humble Hill Farm LLC was founded in 2008 with the purchase of 150 acres of land and two buildings deemed to be of “no value” by the bank. During the initial clean out we found one of the buildings did have enough stability to renovate.
After years of labor, the building was transformed into The Lodge at Humble Hill Farm. We welcomed guests May- Oct. for overnight stays during peak season on the farm, but we found the staffing demands of that level of hospitality to be unsustainable. Ultimately we paused the agri-tourism project to develop other streams of income; namely industrial hemp, specifically CBD flower.
In 2019 our first seedlings of CBD hemp went into the ground. Then when NYS legalized the adult use of cannabis, only previously licensed industrial hemp growers (who’d been growing for two years) were eligible for becoming licensed to grow Adult Use Cannabis.
Humble Hill Farm was among the first 200 farms in NYS to hold such a license. Which was a lifeline since there was no viable market for the previous years industrial hemp crops and nearly all growers across New York State struggled to weather the financial strain of that debacle.
Sungrown On Purpose
What makes our cannabis unique is that we cultivate it amongst the wide assortment of remarkably flavorful produce that our farm has been known for growing over the last 25 years. We grow outdoors in the sun and soil on purpose because we are farmers and that’s where we plant our crops whenever possible. That’s the design, not the default.
As a small scale farm we are able to have an approach to growing that goes beyond the standards of organic practices. Our growing practices are simple:
Free from pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and plastic mulch.
Small scale, locally sourced regenerative farming.
Hand planted, hand weeded, and hand harvested.
We’ve relied on compost, cover crops & soil amendments to build
Up mineral rich living soil. The end result is remarkably flavorful crops.
